The Chameleon board game: rules explained simply
A grid of words, a secret code and one player who has no idea what is going on. Here is how The Chameleon works.
The Chameleon became one of the most popular party games of recent years for a simple reason: you can explain it in thirty seconds and every round plays differently. One player does not know the secret word and has to fake it. Everyone else proves they know it with a single word, without giving it away.
What is The Chameleon?
It is a social deduction game for three to eight players. The box contains topic cards, each with a grid of sixteen words such as animals, films or jobs. Every round reveals which word in the grid is the secret one, except to a single player. That player is the chameleon, who sees the grid but not the word.
The rules step by step
- 1Pick a topic card and place it where everyone can see all sixteen words.
- 2Everyone draws a code card. Most cards show the coordinate of the secret word, one says chameleon.
- 3Roll the code breaker dice to reveal the row and column of the secret word. The chameleon cannot use this, having no code.
- 4In turn, everyone says a single word connected to the secret word.
- 5Discuss, then point at your suspect all at once.
- 6If the group catches the chameleon, the chameleon still gets one guess at the secret word. Guess right and they escape.
How to give a good clue
This is the real dilemma. Too specific and the chameleon locks onto the word immediately. Too general and the group suspects you. A good clue is obvious to anyone who knows the word and useless to anyone who does not.
- Avoid synonyms. If the word is Lion, do not say Big cat.
- Use a personal memory. Safari means something to someone who knows the word, but covers half the grid for the chameleon.
- Read the grid. A good clue would loosely fit several words but fits one perfectly.
- As the chameleon, build on the clue before yours, then step slightly sideways.
Chameleon or impostor game?
Both run on the same engine: one player does not know what everyone else is talking about. The difference is in delivery, and that decides which one fits your group.
| Aspect | The Chameleon | Impostor game on a phone |
|---|---|---|
| What you carry | Box, cards, dice | One phone |
| Players | 3-8 | 3-10 |
| Word source | Printed topic cards | 300+ words, 10 categories |

| Travel friendly | Bring the box | Already in your pocket |

If you have a regular game night where the box comes out anyway, The Chameleon is a great pick. If your games tend to start spontaneously, on a train, in a queue or around a pub table, the phone version wins simply because it is always with you.

- 1Two chameleons. Above eight players, add a second chameleon card. Now two people bluff without knowing about each other.
- 2Silent round. No commenting on the first round of clues. Discussion starts after.
- 3Your own grid. Write sixteen words about your own friend group, workplace or last holiday. It will be the best round of the night.
- 4Reverse chameleon. The chameleon gets a word and nobody else does, and has to lead them to it.
