How does the impostor game work?

Four steps and you are playing. A full round takes two or three minutes.

  1. 01

    Pass the phone around

Enter the names, pick a category, then everyone checks their own card in turn. Swipe, read, hand it on.

  2. 02

Everyone sees a word. One player does not

The crew shares one secret word. The impostor only learns that they are the impostor. From there it is pure bluff.

  3. 03

    Talk while the timer runs

Each player gives one clue about the word. Specific enough to be believed, vague enough to keep the impostor guessing.

  4. 04

    Vote, then the reveal

Two taps and your vote is in. The app shows who the impostor was and whether the crew caught them. Then you play again.

Impostor game rules

What is the impostor game?

The impostor game is a social deduction party game where the whole group shares one secret word, except for a single player. That player is the impostor. Everyone else gives one word clues to prove they know the word, while trying to spot the person who is only pretending. The impostor works backwards: listening to the clues, piecing the word together, and sounding convincing enough to survive the vote.

Most people know the genre from Among Us, but that one needs a screen each. This game brings the same suspicion to a table. One phone and at least three people is the entire setup. No sign up, no server, no waiting in a lobby. The round starts wherever you are sitting.

It is the kind of game you can explain in thirty seconds, and by the end everyone is staring suspiciously at their closest friend. That is why it works at house parties, team offsites, school trips, New Year parties and on a train with two hours left to go.

Why start with this impostor game

No internet needed

Everything runs on the phone. Holidays, trains, mountain tops, basements: if you have a phone, you have a game.

One device, the whole group

Nobody else has to install anything. One phone goes around and ten people play with it.

Words written per language

Word lists are written natively for each of the 38 languages, not machine translated from English.

The argument is built in

Countdown timer, two tap voting, instant results. No pen and paper needed.

More than one impostor

Bigger groups can run two or three impostors. From there you cannot even trust each other.

It remembers who is good

Stats track who played the impostor and who got away with it. The leaderboard starts the rematch on its own.

Frequently asked questions about the impostor game

What is the impostor game?
It is a social deduction party game where everyone shares one secret word, except a single player. That player is the impostor. The crew gives clues to prove they know the word while trying to spot the bluffer, and the impostor tries to sound like they know it too.
How many players do you need?
Three at minimum, though it is noticeably better with four or five, because that is where there are enough people to suspect. The app allows up to ten players per round, and above six players it is worth running two impostors.
Do you need an internet connection?
No. The game runs fully offline and the word lists live on the phone. It works on planes, trains and in holiday houses with no signal.
Does everyone need to install the app?
No. One phone is enough and you pass it around. That also means it still works when half the group is on low battery.
Is it free?
Yes, downloading and the base game are free: three players, the Animals category and thirty second rounds. Premium unlocks ten players, all ten categories, longer rounds and multiple impostors.
Which phones does it run on?
iPhone from iOS 17.6, Android from 8.0. The app is around 11 MB, so it downloads quickly even on mobile data.
What age is it suitable for?
It is rated 4+, but since the game involves reading and discussion, it really lands from about eight to ten years old. It works well at a family table with adults and kids mixed together.
How is it different from Among Us?
Among Us puts you on a virtual spaceship, needs a device each and revolves around tasks. This game brings the same suspicion to real life, with one phone and a conversation. A round takes two or three minutes, not twenty.
