Party games for adults you can actually pick from

Not everyone wants to trade grain for three hours. These games start fast and keep the conversation in the lead role.

A good adult party game has one job: not to feel like homework. If explaining the rules takes longer than the first round, half the room is already on their phone. Every game below starts within ten minutes and still has enough depth to stay good by the third round.

Fast games for a big group

  1. 1Impostor game. Secret word, one impostor, two to three minute rounds. The easiest game here to explain, and it runs for ten people from a single phone.
  2. 2The Chameleon. Word grid plus one player who does not know the word. Slightly slower, very visual.
  3. 3Just One. Cooperative word guessing where duplicate clues cancel out. Unbeatable with a mixed group.
  4. 4Codenames. Two teams, agent names, one word clues. Word people will ask for it every time.
  5. 5Wavelength. Guess where someone is thinking between two ends of a scale. Starts remarkable conversations.

Bluffing and social deduction

  1. 1Secret Hitler. Liberals and fascists, policy votes, constant suspicion. Five to ten players, forty minutes.
  2. 2Mafia. The original of the genre and still effective. Needs a good narrator.
  3. 3Coup. Five minute games where you bluff with cards. Two games become three, then six.
  4. 4Skull. The simplest bluffing card game ever designed. The rules fit on a napkin.
  5. 5The Traitors style games. If there are eight of you and a free evening, this becomes the night.

The fastest one to start

The impostor party game needs no box, no table space and no rules explanation. One phone goes around and three minutes later everybody is suspicious.

For a more serious evening

  1. 1Azul. Beautiful, clean, done in half an hour. A great entry point into modern board games.
  2. 2Ticket to Ride. Train routes, simple rules, pleasant tension. Works at a family table too.
  3. 37 Wonders Duel. Built specifically for two. If you play as a couple, start here.
  4. 4Carcassonne. Tiles, fields, knights. A classic because it is still good.
  5. 5Everdell. If you have two hours and you like a beautiful box.

What to look at when choosing

  • Check the real player count, not the one on the box. Many games claim eight but drag at six.
  • Count the rules explanation. It is hidden playing time and often longer than round one.
  • Avoid elimination games with a mixed group. Anyone knocked out ends up on their phone.
  • Keep one backup game that starts in two minutes. That is what the phone impostor round is for.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best party game for adults in a large group?
Above eight players, social deduction and bluffing games work best, such as the impostor game, Secret Hitler or Codenames. None of them need complicated rules and all of them involve everybody.
What game should I take travelling?
Small box card games like Coup or Skull, and phone games that need nothing else. The impostor game runs offline, so it works on planes and trains.
Is there a good game for two players?
7 Wonders Duel was designed specifically for two, and Patchwork is another excellent choice. Classic party games mostly do not work below three players.

Want to try it right now?
