Halloween party games that actually get the party going
The costumes are on, the pumpkins are carved, and now everyone is standing around the living room. These Halloween party games get you through the first half hour and keep the night going after that.
Good Halloween party games differ from ordinary party games in one way: they carry the mood too. At the start of a Halloween party everyone is a little stiff in their costume, the decorations are up, and nobody knows what happens next. This list is made for that moment. It has Halloween party games for adults, Halloween games for kids, and a spooky impostor round that will be the highlight of the night.
When is Halloween 2026?
Halloween is always on October 31, and in 2026 it falls on a Saturday. That is lucky, because the party can happen on the night itself. Kids can go trick-or-treating in the early evening and the grown-ups take over afterwards. It is not a public holiday in the US or the UK, and most people are off the next morning this year. In the US, daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, so the party even gets an extra hour. UK clocks go back a week earlier, on October 25, which means trick-or-treating in proper darkness, and Bonfire Night follows on Thursday, November 5.
Icebreaker Halloween party games
These are short and get guests talking to each other. They work even if not everyone knows everyone.
- 1In-character introductions. Everyone introduces themselves in one sentence as their costume. The vampire says how long since they last saw daylight, the witch says what is cooking at home.
- 2Who is under the mask? If many guests are strangers, the host writes down three facts about each person, and everyone else guesses which costume they belong to.
- 3Costume contest in three categories: scariest, funniest, most creative. The vote is secret and the winners are announced at midnight.
- 4Horror story chain. The first player starts a scary story with one sentence and everyone adds one in turn. By the end nobody is scared, but everybody is laughing.
- 5Pumpkin carving duel. If you have spare pumpkins, two teams get ten minutes to carve one and the rest of the room scores them.
- 6Halloween bingo. Everyone gets a card with ten squares: someone has vampire fangs, someone is wearing fake blood, someone has already screamed tonight. First full row wins.
Halloween party games for adults
Once the party is in full swing, it is time for the longer Halloween party games. These work best with a grown-up crowd.
- 1Vampire among us. The Halloween impostor round: everyone gets the same spooky word except one player, the vampire. A round of clues, a debate, then a vote. The words are further down.
- 2Wink murder. One guest is secretly the murderer and kills by winking. Whoever gets winked at waits ten seconds, then dies dramatically. Everyone else tries to work out the killer before they wipe out the room.
- 3Horror movie quiz. Ten questions on classic horror films, the first three seconds of famous soundtracks, iconic screams. Better in teams.
- 4Horror charades. Like regular charades, but with Halloween words: mummy, exorcism, zombie apocalypse. More words in our charades ideas.
- 5Spooky never have I ever. Never have I ever watched a horror movie through my fingers. Never have I ever walked through a graveyard at night. More in our never have I ever questions.
- 620 Questions in the dark. Lights off, one flashlight, and you can only think of Halloween characters: Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, the Headless Horseman. The rules are in our 20 Questions game guide.
- 7Ghost sounds. One player makes a creepy sound from the next room and the rest guess what it is: a creaking door, rattling chains, a howling wolf. Whoever guesses right goes next.
Halloween games for kids
Halloween games for kids work best when they are more silly than scary. All of these work from preschool age up.
- 1Mummy wrap. In pairs, one kid wraps the other in toilet paper. The best mummy after one minute wins.
- 2Pumpkin hunt. Hide small paper pumpkins around the house or yard. Whoever finds the most gets first pick of the candy.
- 3Ghost tag. Regular tag, but the ghost wears a white sheet and can only glide.
- 4Witch’s brew. Blindfolded, guess what is in the bowl: cold spaghetti is “worms”, peeled grapes are “eyeballs”.
- 5Spider web crawl. Stretch yarn across a hallway like a web, and everyone has to climb through without touching it.
- 6Doughnut on a string. Hang doughnuts from a line and eat one with no hands. The less soggy cousin of bobbing for apples.
- 7Trick-or-treat at home. If you are not going door to door, the bedroom doors become the houses, and an adult waits behind each one with a small challenge.
Halloween impostor words
For Vampire among us, write these on slips of paper. Everyone gets the same word, except one slip that just says: vampire. Whoever draws it has to work out the word from everyone else’s clues. For the full rules and more lists, see our impostor game words.

Let the phone deal the roles
Impostor in Our Midst: Bluff hands out the secret word, times the debate and runs the vote. There is no Halloween category, so play the list above on paper, and use the ten built-in categories for the rest of the night. The rules are here.

Tips for a better Halloween party
- Say it on the invite. If costumes are required, everyone relaxes, because nobody is the odd one out.
- Low light, lots of candles (or LED ones). Most Halloween party games are better in the half dark. With little kids, keep it bright enough that nobody gets truly frightened.
- Make a spooky playlist. No Halloween party is complete without Thriller, Ghostbusters, Monster Mash and the Time Warp.
- Do not cram it all in. Two or three games an hour is plenty, with time to eat and talk in between.
- Take photos. The group costume shot is the one everybody will dig out again next October.
